St Andrew's Cathedral is the "Cathedra" or seat of the Episcopal Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney. It serves as both the Mother Church of the Diocese, and as a vibrant Cathedral Community in the City of Aberdeen. The present congregation stands in a long line of Christian worship and witness in the North East of Scotland, dating back  many centuries. Its mission is to maintain the rich tradition of Anglican worship, offer hospitality to "all sorts and conditions" of people, and take care of one of Aberdeen's most beautiful and interesting buildings.
The Cathedral has an important historic connection with the United States of America, and thanks to Aberdeen's oil industry, the current congregation includes a significant number of Anglicans from Nigeria. These international connections underwrite its Pilgrimage Project, which aims to offer tourists and visitors a special Christian spiritual dimension to their time in North East Scotland.
In 2018, the Trustees of the Cathedral established a Decade of Development Group to raise the Cathedral's profile in the City, promote its rich musical tradition, extend its social outreach, and preserve its architectural heritage, all under the guidance of the Bishop, Provost, Trustees and Canons.
